The Benefits and Potential Risks of an Open Vacation Policy

Instead of restricting vacation to a set period, like three weeks annually, employees can take as much or as little time as they desire. While some employers consider this policy liberating and think that it drives productivity, o ther people believe that it actually encourages people to work more than they would otherwise, thus leading to burnout and lower productivity.

With an increasingly connected world, vacation does not necessarily mean that someone is unreachable. When employees travel, they can easily make phone calls or send e-mails to address any important issues that arise in their absence. While this approach may work for larger organizations, a small business may struggle more when a member of the team is missing.

Small business owners need to look at the nature of their products and services. Sometimes, not having an answer within minutes can be very detrimental to the business. Other organizations largely operate without the need for face-to-face communication. The decision of whether or not to adopt an unrestricted vacation policy will vary from company to company. Regardless of the decision, however, organizational leaders need to encourage employees to take vacations. This keeps them happy, refreshed, and committed to the job.
